Clifton Braunwalder memorial checkpoint

Boy Scout who lost his life to an impaired driver will be the inspiration for the third annual Clifton Braunwalder Memorial Checkpoint April 7, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s corporal said.

Clifton, 13, of Lascassas was changing a flat tire on his mother’s car April 10, 2014 on Interstate 24 near Sam Ridley Parkway when he was struck and killed by the impaired driver. He played football for St. Rose of Lima Catholic School.

Sheriff’s Cpl. Mark Mack said the checkpoint will be from 10 p.m. to midnight on Old Nashville Highway near Rocky Fork Road.

“The Sobriety checkpoint will be conducted in an effort to raise awareness to the importance of safe driving habits and to remove impaired drivers from the roadways,” Mack said. “Additionally, saturation patrols will be conducted prior to the checkpoint and over the weekend including the anniversary date where Clifton lost his life focusing on impaired driving enforcement.”

Deputies will saturate the areas historically shown to be roadways where impaired driving crashes and arrests occur from Friday night through Monday night. Funding for the overtime will be paid by grant funds supplied by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office.
