Statement from School Board member Wayne Blair

In 2005 and 2006, my two children became third generation graduates of Smyrna High School and finished their kindergarten through twelfth grade journeys through Rutherford County Schools. My family was blessed by the wonderful administrations, faculties, and staffs at Smyrna West Kindergarten, David Youree, Thurman Francis, Cedar Grove, and Smyrna High. I firmly believe the impact these exceptional public schools had on my children provided them a firm foundation for success.

After my children graduated from high school, it was very important for me to find a meaningful way to give back to the school system and community who gave so much to me and my family. In 2006, I decided to run for elected office to represent zone 4 on the Rutherford County School Board. I am humbled and honored by the community support I have received during these last 11 years, and I cannot thank enough the citizens who entrusted me to serve in this extremely important role.

I welcomed by first grandchild, Riley Mae, to the world on October 20th, and I am very excited to begin spending as much time with her and my family as I possibly can. Because I will be dedicating a great deal of time and focus to this, I do not believe I will be able to devote the same level of effort or attention to this board as I have demanded of myself during these three terms.

Today, I am announcing I will not seek reelection to the Rutherford County School Board in 2018. While I will miss the meaningful friendships and working relationships this position has allowed me to develop, I am looking forward to this change in my life.

Again, I want to say thank you to the great employees of this school district, my current and former board member colleagues, and most of all, to the citizens of Rutherford County who have allowed me to serve as their elected representative for three terms.
