Char Steakhouse Will Bring a Piano Bar and Modern Southern Fine Dining to Murfreesboro
For years, Murfreesboro's night out has meant a drive up I-24 to Nashville when the occasion called for white tablecloths and a serious wine list. That calculus is about to change. A modern Southern steakhouse called Char is coming to The Exchange, the mixed-use district taking shape off Medical Center Parkway — and it arrives with a piano bar, a Wine Spectator–honored cellar, and a promise to make Murfreesboro a fine-dining destination in its own right.
The restaurant is the work of 4Top Hospitality, a Nashville-based, employee-owned group known for building distinctive independent concepts rather than cookie-cutter chains. Char is one of its signature brands, and the Murfreesboro location will carry the concept's full expression: modern takes on Southern favorites, an award-winning wine program, private dining space for celebrations and business dinners, and the piano bar that has become something of a calling card. Plans call for a roughly 6,600-square-foot space at 2305 Exchange Drive, near the busy junction of Medical Center Parkway and Robert Rose Drive, with doors projected to open in 2027.
The numbers behind the announcement matter as much as the ambiance. Char is expected to create about 50 jobs — from line cooks and sommeliers to servers and hosts — a meaningful addition to a local hospitality workforce that has expanded rapidly alongside Rutherford County's population. Company leaders, including partner Doug Hogrefe and director of strategy Ali Buchanan, have framed the project as a bet on a Murfreesboro market that is finally big enough, and hungry enough, to support upscale independent dining seven nights a week.
Location tells part of the story. The Medical Center Parkway corridor has become one of the most dynamic stretches of real estate in Middle Tennessee, anchored by Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, The Avenue shopping center, and a steady march of new medical offices, apartments, and retail. The Exchange sits squarely in that growth path, envisioned as a walkable blend of dining, offices, and residences. A destination steakhouse fits the vision neatly: it gives the district an anchor for the dinner hour and gives the surrounding neighborhoods a reason to stay close to home.
There is a broader pattern here, too. As Nashville's dining prices climbed and reservations grew scarce, well-run suburban markets like Murfreesboro, Franklin, and Mt. Juliet have started attracting the kind of chef-driven concepts that once clustered only downtown. Murfreesboro's own scene has matured in recent years, with independent restaurants, craft coffee, and a revitalized downtown square building a food culture that no longer looks to Nashville for validation. Char represents a next step in that arc — an unapologetically special-occasion restaurant planting its flag in the suburbs.
For now, the piano bar and dry-aged steaks remain a couple of years out, and construction timelines in a fast-building corridor can shift. But the intent is clear, and the location is set. When Char opens, a Murfreesboro anniversary dinner, a closing-the-deal steak, or a glass of something from that celebrated wine list will no longer require a trip to the city.
