April Fool’s Day 5K is No Joke for Runners!
Saturday, April 1st is fast approaching, and runners are preparing for the first annual Cannon Runs for Children 5K Run/Walk.
Dozens of race participants will fill downtown Woodbury as competition and fun collide. “A mix of competitive and non-competitive runners will be here on race day supporting the Child Advocacy Center,” explained Event Coordinator Keylon Holloway. “We hope to see some healthy competition. We are grateful to the runners who are helping child abuse victims by participating in the race.”
The Cannon County Child Advocacy Center opened in October of 2007. The first year, 46 children and their families were served. Last year, 121 children and their families reached out for assistance. In the last ten years, the number of Cannon County children disclosing child abuse and child sexual abuse has almost tripled.
Cannon County residents have pitched in to make this event happen. General Sessions Judge Susan Melton, Youth Services Officer Catherine Player, and Coach Brian Elrod organized the event. Local businesses such as Preston Brothers Construction, Tri-Star Title LLC., Anthony’s Flowers and Gifts, Farm Bureau Insurance of Cannon County, First National Bank, Huff and Puff Trucking, Laid Back Lumber, Mitch Wilson State Farm Insurance, Piggly Wiggly, Assistant District Attorney General Trevor Lynch, Woodbury Funeral Home, Boyd’s Garage, Higgins Flea Market, Bernard and Nancy Coomes, Smith Funeral Home, Sonic, and Subway that generously sponsored the event and made in-kind contributions. Even churches such as Experience Community Church are getting involved to show their support for protecting Cannon County children.
Cannon Runs for Children 5K Run/Walk will be held on April 1 in Woodbury. Registration starts at 6:45 a.m. at Dillon Park, with speakers at 7:15 a.m., and the race begins at 7:30 a.m. The entry fees are $25 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.
Runners and walkers may pre-register online at cannoncac.org or by searching Cannon Runs for Children on the runsignup.comwebsite. Or you may also register by contacting the Cannon County Child Advocacy Center at (615) 563-9915 and requesting an emailed registration form.
All funds raised from the event will stay in Cannon County and be used to provide services to the increasing numbers of child abuse victims, child sexual abuse victims, and drug endangered children.
