Blackman chemistry teacher named state finalist for Presidential excellence award

Blackman High School chemistry teacher Kimberly Baumann has been selected as a state-level finalist for the 2016-17 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

This award recognizes outstanding contributions as a teacher of science in Tennessee.

In September, Baumann will be recognized as a state-level finalist by the Tennessee Department of Education at a special banquet held in Nashville. An announcement regarding all the finalists will be published by the Department of Education’s Classroom Chronicles blog.

State-level finalists are submitted for the national selection process.

National awards are given to up to two mathematics and science teachers from each of the 50 states.

National honorees receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, a certificate signed by the president of the United States, and a trip to Washington, D.C., for recognition events. These events include an award ceremony, celebratory events, professional development activities and meetings with policymakers.

Baumann teaches AP chemistry and BCA chemistry at Blackman along with advising senior capstone projects.
