Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club Brings Back Annual Boro BBQ Festival

What’s better than BBQ, live music, food trucks, a Craft Beer Garden, and a beautiful spring day in the Boro? Nothing. Plain and simple.

The Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club is proud to bring back its annual celebration of community, the Boro BBQ Festival! The pandemic might have stopped the gathering, but it didn’t quell the spirit! The festival will be held on Saturday May 7, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at The Oaklands. The event is free and open to the public. Festivities and food begin at 10 a.m. The event is proudly sponsored by Swanson Companies.

The festival encompasses several events in one!

The Dr. George Smith KCBS BBQ Brawl, sponsored by Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford
More than 50 competitors hailing from across the southeast US will haul their smokers into Murfreesboro, prepare rubs, bastes, and sauces, then smoke chicken and ribs to perfection in Rutherford County’s only KCBS-sanctioned event. The total purse is $5,000.

People’s Choice Competition
KCBS is the national BBQ championship authority, and they say the public can’t eat the competition meats…but the Breakfast found a way to let the public judge the cookers! For $10 (tickets purchased on-site), attendees can taste ten 2oz pulled pork samples and vote for their favorite. Competitors can covet this award higher than certified KCBS judges!

Tennessee High School Steak Cook-Off
Area high schools will compete for a cash prize and bragging rights as the best culinary program in the mid-state. Blackman, Wilson Central, McGavock, Gallatin, and Stewart’s Creek High Schools will be represented with accomplished culinary squads. Steaks for the event are being donated by Sam’s Club Each culinary team receive their cut of beef in the morning, and have several hours to prepare the steak, set up plating, and rehearse their presentation before three KCBS-certified judges. Murfreesboro Water & Sewer is also a sponsor of this event.

Tennessee Whiskey Tasting and Beer Garden
Adult attendees can sample the best sour mash that Tennessee has to offer on the secluded back patio of Oaklands Mansion or sample the brews from Deep South Growlers while enjoying live music on the festival grounds. Tickets for the Whiskey Tasting are only $15 and can be purchased via the BoroBBQFest.com website soon!

Live Music from the Pros and Soon-to-be-Pros
The event will feature three professional bands performing on the main stage, beginning with the Jake Leg Stompers at 11. At 12:30 the blues-rock Allen Sizemore Band takes the stage, and the country blues rock Jeff Woods Band will conclude the music, beginning at 2 p.m. Some aspiring musicians will be featured in the Student Pavilion, including the Scales Elementary Steel Drum Band, Northfield Drum Ensemble, and the Oakland Middle School Jazz Band.

Lastly, don’t forget the Food Trucks, Craft Vendors, and Family Fun. You’ll be bouncing and petting (barnyard animals) your way to family memories!

The Boro BBQ Festival is the Breakfast Rotary Club’s top annual fundraising event. The club estimates income from the event to top $70,000 to support Rutherford County non-profits. Sponsors include Swanson Companies, Ascension St Thomas, Dick and Martha Curl, Deep South Growlers, and the Murfreesboro Pulse.
