City Offices and Facilities Closing in Observance of MLK Jr. Day

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day March Begins at Noon at Central Magnet School

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, all City of Murfreesboro offices, and most recreational facilities, will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024.

There will be no garbage pick-up on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024. Monday’s garbage pick-up will be Tuesday, Jan. 16. Tuesday’s garbage pick-up will be Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Murfreesboro Transit, the City’s public transportation service, will not run on the federal holiday.

All Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department facilities, except Adams Tennis Complex, will be closed. Adams Complex will operate regular hours on MLK Jr. Day.

Old Fort Golf Course and Bloomfield Links will be open on MLK Jr. Day.

St. Clair Street Senior Center will be open Saturday, Jan. 13, from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 14, from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., but closed Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of MLK Jr. Day.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an annual federal holiday that celebrates the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. The American holiday honors the life and achievements of the influential civil rights leader.

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day March begins Jan. 15 at Noon at Central Magnet School, 701 E. Main St., and will proceed to Patterson Park Community Center. The march route will head east on East Main to Middle Tennessee Blvd. then right to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. before concluding at Patterson. Participants are encouraged to register for the MLK 2024 Walk via a QR Code attached to the MLK March Flyer.

Parade participants can enjoy breakfast biscuits Monday morning, Jan. 15, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Central Magnet School before the march line-up at 11:30 a.m.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund of Rutherford County will honor the Dr. MLK Jr. holiday with the ‘Celebration of the Arts.’ Special performances will be held at Patterson Park Community Center immediately following the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day March.

The Rutherford County Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the American Red Cross will partner to host the community blood drive in the Patterson Park Community Center gymnasium on MLK Jr. Day, Jan. 15.

The Discovery Center MLR Jr. Day, in participation with the African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County, Jan. 15, 2024, will celebrate “We’ve Come This Far,” a day dedicated to exploring how life has changed in American due to the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. From 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., walk through a timeline of significant Civil Rights. Influential figures such as Dr. King, Rosa Parks, and John Lewis provide participants a living history experience. Free Admission.

The NAACP, Murfreesboro Chapter, will hold the annual Dr. MLK Jr. Breakfast, Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at the James Union Building, 516 Alma Mater Dr. on the Middle Tennessee State University campus. City business offices will resume their regular hours of operation, which are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
