City recognizes Fleet Services employee Tommy Miller with STARS Award
Fleet Services Department employee Tommy Miller has been named STARS award recipient for November 2018.
On Oct. 29, Miller assisted Murfreesboro Fire Rescue units responding to a fire at the City Solid Waste Department, 4765 Florence Road. When District 7, Engine 5 and Ladder 9 arrived on the scene, a Mulcher was approximately 50 percent engulfed. Miller quickly provided City firefighters with knowledge of the Mulcher’s hydraulic lines and mulch materials so hydraulic fluids could be extinguished with foam and wood chips put out from the aerial apparatus.
Mayor Shane McFarland recognized Miller during the Nov. 29, 2018, meeting of the Murfreesboro City Council with the STARS award for Outstanding Performance: “Succeeding Through Attitudes Reflecting Service Excellence.”
Miller is another example of representing the City in a positive light, exhibiting the core values and creating a better quality of life for citizens.
Fleet Department Director Jack Hyatt joined Mayor McFarland in presenting the STARS award to Miller.
“I am proud of the way Tommy handled the tub grinder fire. He has always been willing to go the extra mile while fulfilling his duties for the Fleet Services Department,” said Fleet Services Department Director Jack Hyatt.
Miller has served the City and the Fleet Department as a mechanic since May 2002 when he was first hired as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
In the nomination, the following narrative explanation was provided by Fire Rescue Captain Josh Oliver:
“On October 29, MFRD responded to City Fleet Services for a mulching machine on fire. Heavy smoke and flames were present on arrival. Tommy Miller assisted MFRD units on scene with extensive knowledge of how the machine was built and the expertise of dismantling parts of the equipment to help extinguish the fire. Tommy represented the best of what Murfreesboro City employees have to offer when we work together as a team. The job was accomplished effectively and efficiently with the help of Mr. Miller. Tommy went above and beyond this day and his assistance was appreciated by all on scene.”
The Mulcher was a total loss. The cause of the fire was accidental.
The STARS Service Excellence program is intended to recognize outstanding employees who embody the city’s standards for service excellence and exemplify the city’s core service values. The purpose of the STARS award is to recognize and reward those employees who go above and beyond their normal job duties in providing outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.
Congratulations to Tommy Miller for being named recipient of the STARS Award for Outstanding Performance.
