Discovery Center to Host Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration
The Discovery Center at Murfree Spring recently announced, “We’ve Come This Far,” a free day at the museum on Monday, January 15th in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Made possible by the support of the Nissan Foundation and in collaboration with the African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County, this day-long celebration will take place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Discovery Center in downtown Murfreesboro at 502 SE Broad Street.
“On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we come together to celebrate not only the progress we’ve made but also the diverse cultures that make up our community,” said Tara MacDougall, President and CEO of the Discovery Center. “We’re grateful for the continued support of the Nissan Foundation and the collaboration with the African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County in bringing this event to life. We’re also excited to be adding a special service project to this year’s activities, benefiting the Alvin C. York Veterans Administration Medical Center.”
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration will feature hands-on educational exhibits and programming, including an interactive timeline of the Civil Rights Movement with local actors portraying significant historical figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and John Lewis. The event will also include a community walk and a service project, providing attendees with the opportunity to create cards and artwork to be distributed to veterans currently undergoing treatment at the Alvin C. York Veterans Administration Medical Center. As a part of the Discovery Center’s Cultural Heritage Free Day program, admission to the museum is free during the event.
