Murfreesboro Electric crews helping in Hurricane Michael recovery
Two Murfreesboro Electric Department crews left for Cordele, Georgia, Thursday morning to contribute to the Hurricane Michael recovery efforts.
The two-man crews left at 5:30 a.m., following two Groves Electric Contract crews staged in Tallahassee, Florida, before the storm. The Murfreesboro crews will assist the Crisp County Power Commission, which serves about 12,000 households.
By the time Michael made landfall yesterday afternoon, it had grown to a powerful Category 4 storm. It left neighborhoods in ruins and more than 900,000 homes and businesses throughout the Southeast without power.
The hurricane continues to move north toward the Carolinas, where many residents are still recovering from extreme flooding following Hurricane Florence. Murfreesboro Electric General Manager P.D. Mynatt said crews would stay as long as necessary to complete the job.
“It is in times of such hardship that we demonstrate the strength of public power communities assisting each other,” he said in an email to department employees. “Special thanks to these men and all the lineworkers who leave home and work long hours in dangerous conditions and inclement weather to restore power to those in need.”
