Grandparents and Grandchildren to Celebrate
(MURFREESBORO, Tenn.)—Representatives from Generation for Creation Inc., a Murfreesboro-based nonprofit organization devoted to promoting the arts among youth, will host a grandparents day event on September 7, 2019 at Patterson Park Community Center in honor of national grandparents day that is typically celebrated the 1st Sunday in September.
Sponsors for the event include Tennessee Art Commission, Middle Tennessee State University, and City of Murfreesboro. Individual sponsorships are needed for a grandparent or grandchild to participate in this year’s event.
June LaGreen, motivational speaker and storyteller, also a great grandparent of 4, will inspire the senior audience with her speech: “Wake Up! It’s Not Too Late”. Door prizes and information vendors and topics such as grandparents raising grandchildren will be available. Grandparents will be treated with stories written by grandchildren read by MTSU Theatre Professor, Dr. Jette Hallady and a talent contest presented by grandchildren.
Youth participants will register to audition in the categories of drama, singing, art, dance, modeling (male and female) and musical performance. Children also are welcomed to audition in more than one category. Solo, duo and group acts are also invited to audition.
An art scholarship in memory of Dr. George Smith, a physician who spent hours volunteering in the community and an avid supporter of child development and educational growth. Dr. Smith is remembered as a founder of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund. An overall prize of $300 will be presented following the talent contest. Talent Contestants will compete with Overall Winners of 2018: Zakiyah Lamb and Zachary Dame. Zakiyah Lamb just recently concluded a production as the lead actress, Dorothy in “The Wiz”.
Columbia, Tenn., native Lynnette Cole, former Miss USA and the International On Air Spokesperson for Pur Minerals, will serve as the mistress of ceremonies for this year’s event. Braxton Cole is the co host and happens to be Ms. Cole’s little brother.
A loyal supporter of GFC and its mission to encourage and promote the arts, Cole said, “Each year my spirit is renewed knowing that Generation for Creation exists, giving children a place to encourage, develop, create and express their talents. Sometimes we all need to remember our dreams as a child and aspire to be everything we want to be.”
