The Square Closes to Cars at 5, and the Music Starts at 6:30: Friday Night Live Returns August 7 With Third Party Thieves
There is a specific moment on a Friday Night Live evening that regulars wait for: five o'clock, when the barricades go up and the Historic Downtown Square stops being a place cars drive around and becomes a place people stand in.
It happens again on Friday, August 7, when Third Party Thieves take the stage on the west side of the Square from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The concert is free, and it is open to absolutely everyone.
What the evening actually looks like
The Square closes to all vehicle traffic starting at 5 p.m., which is the real beginning of the night. Downtown restaurants and shops open early for it, and the Boro Art Crawl runs alongside the music, with artists set up along the sidewalks ringing the courthouse.
That combination is what separates Friday Night Live from a plain outdoor concert. You can treat it as a show — arrive at 6:30, find a spot, stay for three hours. Or you can treat it as a downtown evening with a soundtrack, drifting between the art crawl, the storefronts, and dinner, catching the band in pieces. Both are correct. Most people do some version of the second.
Bring a chair, and come before the good spots go
A few things worth knowing if this is your first one.
Bring a folding chair. There is no seating provided, and the people who look most comfortable at 8 p.m. are the ones who carried something in at 6. Families tend to settle toward the back and the edges, where there is room for kids to move without navigating the standing crowd near the stage.
Parking is the usual downtown calculation, made slightly harder by the closure — the lots and side streets a block or two off the Square are your friend, and the walk is short and pleasant in the evening. Arriving before 6 makes all of this dramatically easier.
And plan for August. The stage lights come on while it is still fully daylight and warm; the last hour, after the sun drops behind the buildings on the west side, is the genuinely lovely part of the night.
Why a courthouse square is the right room
Murfreesboro's Square was laid out to put the Rutherford County Courthouse at the literal center of the town, with commerce arranged in a ring around it. That geometry — a hard architectural edge on all four sides enclosing an open middle — happens to be close to ideal for live music. Sound has somewhere to bounce, the crowd has a natural boundary, and the buildings themselves supply the backdrop.
It is also why the series works as a downtown business event and not only as a concert. An evening that puts a few hundred people inside a ring of restaurants and shops, on a night the street belongs to pedestrians, is worth more to those businesses than the ticket revenue it doesn't collect.
