Friends of the Stones River National Battlefield Open House

Thursday, June 23, 2017 saw a gathering of forty fans of Rutherford County’s Stones River National Battlefield

celebrating the accomplishments of the ‘Friends of the Stones River National Battlefield’ over the past year.

President Mike Liles shared how the ‘Friends Group’ helps support the staff and volunteers of the Battlefield

by:

• Supporting the educational activities relating to the significance of the Battle of Stones River

• Sponsoring commemorative activities for the community and the region

• Expanding appreciation for the Battlefield beyond its historical significance

• Creating an appreciation for the park’s natural resources, scenic beauty and recreational opportunities

• Continued advocacy for the preservation of significant battlefield landscape features

The gathering enjoyed food, conversation and a special tour of the Visitor Center museum conducted by Chief

Ranger Jim Lewis. There was a standing ovation when President Mike Liles thanked past President Eddie

Macon for his service to the Friends of the Stones River National Battlefield when interest and membership

diminished. Eddie Macon stayed the course and help guide the Friends group to the level of participation we

see today.

Membership in the Friends of the Stones River National Battlefield is only $25/year for an individual or

$35/year for the entire family.
