MTCS celebrates the grand opening of the Seeker Space

Middle Tennessee Christian School is providing students with a new type of classroom. On September 17, students and the community gathered for the grand opening celebration of the Seeker Space – a collaborative setting where students can meet for making, learning, sharing and exploring while seeking God, seeking creation, and seeking the truth. It is one of the first of its kind to open in Rutherford County.

Kelley Mullins, director of technology at MTCS explained, “Technology in today’s world makes learning relevant. Coding provides children with opportunities to develop higher order thinking skills and the ability to collaborate, problem solve and think more critically. The Seeker Space will provide the environment and tools to practice all of these skills as well as many more.”

Students will have access to a 3D printer; Dash and Dot robots to use for coding and programming; a sewing station; a green screen for video productions; and an idea paint collaboration wall where they can organize and write project ideas on the wall. The space was created to prepare students with skills in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art and math.

Teachers and librarians will provide guided curriculum but leave the learning and creativity up to the students. Designed initially to benefit PK-5th grades, mentorships will also be offered to upperclassmen, who will assist younger grades in utilizing the space.

“Students will be able to explore their own interests; learn to use tools and materials both physical and virtual as well as develop creative projects,” said Dr. Melanie Maxwell, MTCS elementary principal, “They will be able to take the knowledge they are gaining in the classrooms through the integrated units and build upon that learning in the Seeker Space.”

Maxwell continues, “The space is inspired by Jeremiah 29:13, ‘You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’”

The Seeker Space is located at MTCS in the Vester and Charlene Waldron Library. Find more information about Middle Tennessee Christian School at http://www.mtcscougars.org/.
