JazzFest 2021 kicks off Saturday, May 1
JazzFest is an annual music event organized by Main Street Murfreesboro that highlights local student jazz bands and professional talent thanks to our presenting sponsors T-Mobile and First Bank. The festival begins Saturday, May 1 at 10am and runs until approximately 8:00pm on the historic public square. Access to the square, on South Church Street and East Main Street, will be closed beginning Saturday morning at 7:00am until 9:30pm.
This is sure to be a fun event for families to come downtown and take part in, with over 12 food trucks, an interactive Kids’ Alley featuring hands on musical activities sponsored by Ridenour Music, and downtown shops open for you to shop, there is something for everyone. Two pre-show music clinics for early elementary aged children and high school to adults will be offered in the morning. From the stage in front of the courthouse The Discovery Center will lead their “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” clinic at 10:00am. This one-hour interactive class will be a fun, hands-on program for preschool aged and up children to learn about music and science. Starting at 11:00am Yamil Conga will lead a Music Clinic held at The Center for the Arts, where he will perform on his drums and talk about culture, music, and drumming.
The JazzFest music event is focusing on student jazz bands from noon to 4:00pm on stage in front of the county courthouse. Starting at noon the following schools will perform Oakland Middle School, St. Rose Middle School, Blackman High School, Middle TN Christian School, and Rockvale High School ending at 3:00 with the MTSU Ensemble #1, which is comprised of MTSU music majors. There are three professional bands performing from 4-8:00pm for one-hour blocks each. Starting at 4:00pm the Bryan Cumming Band will perform, then at 5:30pm Alison Brazil’s band will take the stage with special guest Yamil Conga on the drums. Finishing the night off at 7:00pm Music City Swing performs with their 21-member band.
Throughout the afternoon a Kids Alley will be open along the North Public Square sponsored by Ridenour Music with interactive activities for children to participate in. Over 12 food trucks and vendors will be placed along the inner loop of the square all day. Bring your chairs and plan to stay for the day to enjoy learning, music, eating, and shopping at downtown small businesses.
Based on CDC guidelines Main Street is asking the public while at JazzFest to distance themselves six feet from others who do not live in your household. Please bring your own chairs and sit in groups with those who you came with, allowing space from others sitting near you.
