Kindness Kickoff at Mitchell-Neilson

Over 700 Mitchell-Neilson students participated in the Kindness Kickoff in October by creating Pinwheels for Peace.

“October is National Bullying Prevention Month,” says Robin Newell, Principal. “Everyone has a voice in raising awareness of bullying. Students who feel safe, recognized, and supported are more successful in school and in life.”

Students took this opportunity to write words about kindness and how they can show it to others.  Utilizing crayons, markers, pictures and words students decorated pinwheels as a symbol of peace and kindness. The pinwheels were placed on the playground fence as a graphic reminder to students and the community.

“This is a great way for students to create a visual about how to show kindness to others and how to spread peace in our community,” says MN Teacher Sayward Ratliff.

All MCS schools participate in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.  The four basic rules that represent the program include:

  • We will not bully others.
  • We will try to help students who are bullied.
  • We will include students that are left out.
  • If we know of bullying, we will tell an adult at school and at home.

The Olweus Program is a comprehensive program that includes schoolwide, classroom, individual, and community components. The program is focused on long-term change that creates a safe and positive school climate.
