Oakland Student Earns Eagle Scout by Making ‘Memory Tables’
In the Oakland High School library, you will find five wooden tables covered in hundreds of pictures dating back to the 1970’s.
George Moisant — senior at Oakland — recently earned his Eagle Scout award by creating these “Toot’s-inspired” tables.
Moisant, along with a group of volunteers, cut out more than 500 photographs to place on the tables.
Each table is assigned a decade from 1970-2010 with pictures throughout each decade displayed underneath a piece of plexiglass.
Moistant was given the idea by librarian LeAnn Hays.
“My mother actually did the first table,” Hays said. “She retired and wanted a project, so I suggested doing a picture collage of the 1970’s Oakland class. George noticed that the other years weren’t completed, and he offered to finish them as his Eagle Scout project.”
The pictures were found from previous yearbooks and photocopied.
“Printing all the photos actually took about 20 hours in total,” Moisant said. “It was a huge project.”
Some current Oakland teachers and faculty have spotted themselves on the tables in photos.
Students from the National Honor Society were a huge help in cutting out all the photos along with multiple other Boy Scouts, Moisant said.
“I’m hoping that these stay for a long time,” Moisant said. “I hope that someone, like another Boy Scout, would take what I’ve done and keep adding to it throughout the decades. I hope they last for a long time.”
The project would have not been possible without the generous donations from Farrer Brothers and Slegecraft, Moisant said.
Both companies supplied everything Moisant needed to complete his project.
