Police: Inmate Shot, Killed After Stabbing Deputy with Screwdriver at 100 Oaks
A Robertson County inmate was shot and killed after he reportedly stabbed a deputy with a screwdriver inside a Vanderbilt University medical clinic.
Authorities told News 2 the inmate, identified as Rodney Cole, was being transported to the Thompson Lane clinic at 100 Oaks for a medical appointment when the incident happened on the third floor.
Cole allegedly had a screwdriver in his possession and stabbed Deputy Josh Wiley multiple times. Wiley was also shot at least one time although it’s unclear by whom; Metro police are still investigating whether or not the inmate got a hold of the deputy’s gun during a struggle.
Wiley’s partner, Deputy Tornishae Jones, who was helping with the transport, pulled his weapon and fired multiple shots, striking the 37-year-old inmate at least once.
Cole, a recently-convicted bank robber, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputy Wiley was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was last listed in critical condition. A video sent to News 2 from a viewer showed dozens of police cars escorting the ambulance to the hospital. Neighbors described Deputy Wiley as “a great guy” and were shocked by the news.
Deputy Jones was not injured.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center released a statement after the shooting saying employees and visitors were asked to shelter in place out of an abundance of caution as law enforcement swept the entire building.
“The safety and well-being of our patients and employees is always our first concern,” added John Howser, Chief Communications Officer.
Howser told News 2 the clinic will be open as usual on Thursday with no extra security since this was an isolated incident. Patients whose appointments were disrupted today are being rescheduled.
According to the Tennessee Department of Correction, Cole was serving a 14-year prison sentence after being convicted on state charges in a robbery and carjacking case in 2013. That same year, he was indicted on federal bank robbery charges and recently convicted this past April. Cole was awaiting sentencing in the federal case supposed to take place this August.
