Rutherford County experiencing shortage of school crossing guards

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to hire 15 much-needed school crossing guards, Sgt. Tim Hayes said.

The School Traffic Safety Patrol person is responsible for the safe and orderly flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic within a designated school zone in Rutherford County.

Each person works approximately two hours for $34 daily. The exact hours depend on the bell times of each school.

“Some of our schools are in high traffic areas and so our traffic guards play a valuable role of keeping kids safe as the arrive and depart school,” Hayes said. “We also have many students who walk to school. It’s all about student safety.”

Currently, the department is using existing traffic personnel to fill in at schools without a traffic guard. Doing so, however, causes shortages at their assigned schools, which leads to ongoing traffic issues.

All necessary uniforms and equipment will be furnished by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
