Rutherford County’s brand‑new solid waste transfer station – located at 6000 Landfill Road in Murfreesboro – officially opened on June 17, 2025, in time for National Garbage Man Day.
The 12,000 to 12,500 sq ft facility, built on a 200‑acre site, consolidates residential and commercial waste on a tipping floor before compacting and loading it into larger trucks bound for regional landfills like Cedar Ridge.
Designed to be financially self‑sustaining – thanks to tipping fees and a five‑year renewable contract with Waste Management – this station eases the burden on the rapidly growing county’s waste infrastructure, reduces haulage distances, and lowers disposal costs without drawing on taxpayer funds. It represents Rutherford County’s first step toward solid‑waste independence and more sustainable operations.
