Sheriff’s Citizens Academy

Residents may ride-along with sheriff’s deputies and learn about Sheriff’s Office operations by taking the free Sheriff’s Citizens Academy course.

The 14-week class will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays beginning Aug. 10 at the Sheriff’s Office at 940 New Salem Highway in Murfreesboro.

Topics covered include communications, patrol, training, investigations, school resource officers, gangs, detention, forensics and cold cases, active shooter, narcotics, negotiations, SWAT, mounted patrol, K-9s and the psychology of law enforcement.

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh invited citizens to participate in the class.

“We encourage citizens to learn more about the operations and duties of your Sheriff’s Office,” Fitzhugh said. “The academy allows citizens to know first-hand about our duties and the way our deputies serve you.”

Sgt. Jimmy Cassidy said the classes are educational.

“We want people to know what we do, why we do our duties and how we operate the Sheriff’s Office,” Cassidy said.

Citizens interested may download the application from the Sheriff’s Web page at http://www.rcsotn.com/, click under the Community Services link and click on the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy link.
