Smyrna Fire Department Reminds Citizens to “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”
Mayor Mary Esther Reed Proclaims October 3 - 9, 2021, Fire Prevention Week
Smyrna Fire Department is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” The campaign works to educate everyone about simple, but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.
Mayor Mary Esther Reed officially proclaimed October 3 – 9, 2021, as Fire Prevention Week throughout Smyrna. “I urge all of our citizens to join Smyrna Fire Department and participate in this life-saving campaign,” shared Mayor Reed. “Make sure everyone in your home understands the sounds of fire alarms and knows how to respond.”
Smyrna Fire Chief Bill Culbertson encourages all residents to educate themselves and their loved ones about the 2021 theme.
“In a fire, seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy,” explained Culbertson. “We urge our community to make sure they have working smoke alarms in their homes, to understand the sounds the alarms make, and for all members of the household to practice EDITH (exit drills in the home).
Smyrna Fire Department wants to share safety tips to help you understand the sounds of smoke alarms:
- A continuous set of 3 loud beeps means smoke or fire. Get out, call 911, and stay out!
- A single chirp every 30 to 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be replaced.
- Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
- All smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years.
- Make sure your smoke alarm meets the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
Smyrna Fire Department participates in the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office Get Alarmed TN program. Firefighters will install FREE smoke alarms in homes across Smyrna. For more information and to schedule an installation, please call 615-459-9735.
