23-year-old dies after yet another shooting near MTSU’s campus
Yet another shooting has taken place on Greenland Drive near Middle Tennessee State University’s campus.
Police said it happened at 1:50 p.m. Thursday at the Student Quarters apartments in the courtyard area.
When officers arrived, they found a man, identified as 23-year-old Jessie Buford, had been shot multiple times. He was taken to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital where he died a short time later.
“I heard what sounded to me like more then 10 gunshots. I’m not sure exactly how much, and then I heard a bunch of screaming and yelling,” said resident Kaitlyn Means. “I was too afraid to really look outside because I didn’t want them to see me, but it was just outside my room and I immediately called the cops.”
Witnesses described the suspect as a black male who is 6 feet tall with a thin build, short hair, wearing khaki pants, a white shirt and black coat.During the investigation, police executed a search warrant at apartment 106 in relation to suspected drug activity.
Murfreesboro police reported it has developed a suspect in the shooting but are withholding their identity during the investigation. Attempts to locate the suspect are underway.
WKRN’s sister station in Memphis is reporting police have issued a BOLO, or a “be-on-the-lookout,” for a murder suspect out of Murfreesboro but it is unknown if it is connected to Thursday’s shooting.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 615-893-7867.
Thursday’s shooting is among several that have happened in recent weeks near MTSU’s campus, with at least two happening at or near the same apartment complex. Two people were arrested in those two shootings last week, and another man was injured in a separate shooting on the other side of campus last Saturday.
The police department is staffing extra officers in marked and unmarked patrol cars, as well as having officers conduct foot patrols in the area.
