Booze It & Lose It on Labor Day Weekend

Enjoy the Labor Day weekend but drivers are reminded to refrain from drinking and driving during the three-day holiday, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s sergeant said.

People who are drinking need to make a responsible choice on how to get home, said Sgt. Michael Rodgers. Use a designated driver, call a friend or use a ride share service.

“We want people to have a good time and enjoy their weekend but we want everyone to be safe on the roads,” Rodgers said.

Sheriff’s deputies will watch for impaired drivers during the holiday, especially since it is the first weekend for college football.

They will join the Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers and other officers during a sobriety checkpoint at 11 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday on South Rutherford Boulevard.

Deputies will work overtime Saturday night on Interstate 24 to concentrate on drunk drivers. The overtime costs are paid from an alcohol enforcement grant by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office.
