SUV driver faces DUI and gun charges after crashing into utility poles

The driver of an SUV who crashed into several utility poles, knocking out power and causing NW Broad Street to be shut down for hours, faces DUI and gun charges.

Officers served warrants to 28-year-old Jordan Deante Smartt after he was treated and released from the hospital. Smartt was driving a black Jeep Grand Cherokee when he hit multiple electric poles around 5:27 a.m. Friday, June 6, causing electrical wires to hang low across NW Broad near Medical Center Parkway. Smartt faces charges of DUI (second offense) and possession of a handgun while under the influence. The handgun was loaded.

A dump truck driver stopped just before the low-hanging lines and then drove under them. Multiple live wires, two electric poles, and two telephone poles were damaged. The dump truck driver was not injured.

The driver of a third vehicle, a blue Chevrolet Equinox, reported that she was hit while attempting to cross NW Broad from Medical Center Parkway. The Equinox sustained extensive damage, but the driver was not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation.

Smartt was released from the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $35,000 bond.  A court date is set for June 17, in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.
