Candidates for Murfreesboro City Offices to Participate in Televised, Web-Streamed LWV Forum

Murfreesboro voters get a chance to hear from candidates on the August 4, 2022, ballot in three voter forums scheduled for Tuesday evening, June 7, at Murfreesboro City Hall. Hosted by the League of Women Voters in partnership with Murfreesboro CityTV, the forums will include candidates for Murfreesboro mayor, Murfreesboro City Council, and Murfreesboro City School Board. The forums will be cablecast live on Murfreesboro CityTV, live streamed on various channels, and available for later viewing. The public is also invited to attend in person.

The schedule for the forums is

  • 5:00-5:35 PM Mayoral candidates – Nathan Bennett, Tony Lehew, Shane McFarlan
  • 6:00-7:10 PM City Council candidates (3 seats up for election) – Jami Averwater, Carolyn Cox, Madelyn Scales Harris, Austin Maxwell, Warren Russell, Samantha Sourinho, Ricky Turner
  • 7:30-8:10 PM City School Board candidates (3 seats up for election) – Karen Dodd, Barbara Long, Amanda Moore, Florence Omachonu

Ending times are approximate.

Candidates will introduce themselves and respond to a moderator’s questions on a timed basis. A pool of questions for the moderator’s usage are compiled by a League committee using citizen input. The public is invited to submit suggested questions to the League at lwvrutherford@gmail.com by Friday, June 3. Each forum’s moderator, who is not publicly aligned with any candidate, makes the final determination of questions.

The League attempts to schedule forums for all contested general elections. In order to assure impartiality and comply with FCC rules for televised events, a majority of candidates must agree to participate in order for the League to go forward with a forum, said Leslie Collum, local League co-president.

The forum can be viewed live on Murfreesboro City TV located on Comcast Xfinity channels 3 and 1094, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Mobile, https://www.youtube.com/cityofmurfreesboro, murfreesborotn.gov/citytv, and on the City’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/cityofmurfreesborotn.

Early voting runs July 15 through July 30.
