Drug Take Back Day Saturday

Dispose of your unused prescription medications safely by dropping the drugs off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sheriff’s Office in Murfreesboro or TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna.

The Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration during DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day April 28 to get rid of expired or unwanted medications.

People who want to dispose of the medications may simply drive up to either location.

Cpl. Robert Dowell and Deputy Heather Rowland will take the medications at the Sheriff’s Office near the flagpole at the main offices located at 940 New Salem Highway in Murfreesboro.

Deputies Brian Gonzales and T.J. Hinson will accept the mediations at TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center’s drive-through awning at the main entrance in the blue tent off Sam Ridley Parkway.

Donut Country donated several dozen donuts for the people who arrive early at the Sheriff’s Office.

Dowell said the collection targets controlled substances such as opioids for pain relief and benzodiazepines for anxiety. All medications will be accepted.

“This is a safe way to dispose of unused medications rather than disposing of the drugs into the water system,” Dowell said.

Medicines collected will be disposed of safely.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported 53 percent of Americans who use prescription drugs without a prescription obtain the drugs from a friend or relative.

The Take-Back Day collection is a safe and easy way to protect your loved ones and remove the drugs from homes.

People who cannot attend the event Saturday may drop off unused and unwanted prescriptions anytime in the bin located just inside the Sheriff’s Office’s main lobby.
