Erma Siegel Fifth Graders Visit Middle Point
Fifth graders from Erma Siegel Elementary School recently visited Middle Point Landfill where they learned about recycling, environmental safety, waste treatment and more.
The tour consisted of three different stations, including a waste-collection truck the students could explore and even get behind the wheel. Each stop was designed to teach the children something new about what happens after they take out the trash.
On arrival, the students gathered in the convenience center parking lot where they learned about trash collection, waste generation and potential careers in waste management and environmental sustainability.
From there, the fifth graders visited the onsite leachate treatment plant where they got to see firsthand how landfill infrastructure works and how it keeps the surrounding environment safe and contaminant-free.
The last stop on the tour allowed students to observe active fill operations. Topics covered at this stop included day-to-day landfill operations and environmental protection and compliance.
