Locating and apprehending three armed carjacking suspects earned a sheriff’s deputy honors as Officer of the Month for February from Ford of Murfreesboro.

Deputy Lawson Royal spotted the suspects run from a wooded area, get into a car and drive away Jan. 18 on Interstate 24. Royal followed the suspects until three additional deputies stopped the suspects who were taken into custody.

Owner Andy Obeissy of Ford of Murfreesboro presented Lawson with a watch.

“Ford of Murfreesboro is proud to recognize officers that serve and protect our community,” Obeissy said.  “We know that these men and women make our community a safer place for everyone.”

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh commended Royal.

“Deputy Royal was alert in spotting the suspects before they escaped,” Sheriff Fitzhugh said. “We commend him and the other deputies for taking the suspects into custody safely.”

The case began when Smyrna Police asked the deputies’ help in locating the suspects accused of a carjacking in Nashville. The suspects fled from a Smyrna apartment complex. Royal spotted the suspects and followed them until deputies stopped them on Interstate 24.

Metro Nashville Police and Smyrna Police took over the investigation.
