Hawkins Family plea for info on murder

Gregg Hawkins’ wife, daughters and brother want justice for his murder and appealed Monday for information to solve the case three years ago Tuesday.

Hawkins, 53, of Murfreesboro was fatally shot Oct. 16, 2015 at Mona Boat Ramp on Jefferson Valley Road. He was fishing with his adult daughter, Brandi, who waited in the boat when he went to retrieve his truck.

Sheriff’s detectives believe he was killed by someone breaking into cars parked at the boat ramp.

During a press conference Monday, wife Janet Hawkins, daughters Brandi Jackson and Logan LeRese and Gregg’s brother, Darren, asked for information along with Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh and Detective Capt. Britt Reed.

Wife Janet Hawkins said she hopes people will provide information.

“Gregg did not deserve not one ounce of this,” the wife said. “He deserves justice. He was a good man and he deserves justice.”

Brother Darren Hawkins said Gregg’s death affected family, friends and co-workers.

“It’s been a difficult situation and so if you do as the sheriff said, if you do have any information, no matter how little you think it is, please share that information,” Darren Hawkins said. “This person or persons took Gregg away from us but they can’t take our memories.”

Jackson said many people have interacted with the person who killed her dad over the past three years.

“It’s your duty to this community to get that person off the street, do the right thing and come forward,” Jackson said.

LaRese said the suspect is still out there.

“No piece of information is too small,” LaRese said. “Please come forward so we can bring this case to justice.”

Fitzhugh said detectives have worked on the murder for three years. He asked people who have information, no matter how insignificant, to please call Detective Steve Kohler at 615-904-3046 or Detective Kyle Norrod at 615-904-3076.

“It may be the one piece that we are missing,” Fitzhugh said. “It may lead us in a direction that we have not been led in before.”

Reed said he is reaching out to the community for information, especially:

  • People who may have heard someone talking about details on the case.
  • Descriptions of people who might have been seen entering or leaving the boat dock between 10:30 and 11 a.m. the morning of Oct. 16, 2015 or in the days previous to the murder.
  • Descriptions of anyone acting suspicious in the area during that area or a vehicle speeding or driving recklessly in the area that day or previous to the murder.

Hawkins was a Nissan engineer and a member of World Outreach Church.
