James Avent Dismukes obituary
James Avent Dismukes, age 93 of Murfreesboro, died Wednesday, February 15, 2018. He was born in the Bethel Community of Rutherford County and was a son of the late Granville and Margaret Smith Dismukes. He was also preceded in death by his wife Margaret Buchanan Dismukes, sisters, Adeline Behm and Selene Woodson; and brothers, G.S. “Sump” Dismukes, Freddie, Walter, and Zach Dismukes.
Survivors include three daughters, Milly Dismukes of Murfreesboro, Patty Musgrave and husband Joel of Lewisburg, and Ginny Finch and husband Tim of Tullahoma; sisters, Laura Hooper of Waverly and Lucy Rice of Murfreesboro; four grandchildren, Matthew Finch and wife Shanna, Daniel Musgrave and wife Tiffany, Jacob Musgrave, Rachel Hinson and husband Shane; five great grandchildren, Isabella Reece Finch, Emery McClayne Finch, Luke Musgrave, Samantha Hurt, and Samuel Hayes Hinson.
An avid outdoorsman and lifelong farmer, Mr. Dismukes was also a longtime member of the Blackman United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School. He attended the Bethel and Florence Schools, the Murfreesboro Training School and was a 1942 graduate of Central High School. He attended MTSU until volunteering for service in World War II in the South Pacific from 1942 thru 1947 with the U.S. Navy. He later served on the Rutherford County Court for 24 years and the Rutherford County Equalization Board for 20 years.
Mr. Dismukes was a past president of the Blackman Community Club and the Rutherford County Livestock Association. He served as a director of the Middle Tennessee Electric Board from 1979-2003 and was a past board member of the Rutherford County Farm Bureau, the Rutherford County Council for Children with Special Needs and was a member of Dairymen, Inc. He enjoyed the fellowship of his friends as a member of the Sportsman Club, the Walter Hill Country Club, and was a longtime member of the Hooper’s Supply Coffee Club.
Visitation with the family will be Sunday from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with Brother Joe Rushing officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with grandsons and nephews serving as pallbearers.
