Kingdom Ridge neighbors donate child car seats

One Colorado mother who just moved to Tennessee received Southern hospitality when a school resource officer and his wife donated a child safety seat for her 4-year-old child.

School Resource Officer Matt Clagg stopped the mother and found her newborn baby properly secured in a car safety seat but her 4-year-old did not have a car seat.

State law requires children to be secured in child passenger safety seats.

Patrol Sgt. Brandon Cisek searched for a car seat at the Sheriff’s Office but could not find one.

Sheriff’s dispatchers called other emergency services agencies but could not locate a car seat for the child.

Clagg’s wife brought a booster seat to the mother and child.

The Claggs recognized the need to restock the child safety seats. They asked for seat donations on their personal Facebook page and the Kingdom Ridge neighborhood Facebook page.

Kingdom Ridge residents graciously responded with 17 new car seats they donated to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

Seats will be distributed to parents who are unable to provide child safety seats for their children, Clagg said.

The Sheriff’s Office thanks the Kingdom Ridge residents and the Claggs for donating child passenger seats for the safety of children.

Also, Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is joining in the national observance of National Child Passenger Safety Week Sept. 15-21. Car crashes is the No. 1 cause of death nationwide for children ages 1-13.

The week is especially significant in Rutherford County because county residents the late Dr. Robert Sanders, known as “Dr. Seat Belt,” and his wife, Pat, lobbied state legislators to become the first state to require child restraint seats in 1978.

Parents can learn about the seat belt requirements for different ages of children at the Tennessee Traffic Safety link at https://tntrafficsafety.org/cps.
