Mayor Shane McFarland recognizes Ronnie Johnson as STAR

Mayor Shane McFarland honored Ronnie Johnson as a STAR recipient during the Jan. 16, 2025, City Council meeting.

Mayor McFarland recognized Johnson after being nominated by fellow employees in December for his hard work and conscientious attitude in keeping the City streets clean. The following are two nominations provided to the STARS committee by fellow employees:

“I always see Ronnie keeping our city clean. He is an exceptional worker and we should all work by his example. Hardest worker in the City!”

“Ronnie is dedicated to the City and is always working hard. And he always does it with a smile!”

Raymond Hillis, Executive Director of Public Works, shared the following comments about Ronnie: “Ronnie is an A-1 employee who does an exceptional job. He always maintains a positive attitude and takes pride in his work. I wish I had many more employees like him. Thanks Ronnie, the streets of Murfreesboro are always clean, leaving visitors with a great impression of our City.”

Johnson has served in many seasonal, part-time, and full-time positions for the City of Murfreesboro, always with high respect among fellow employees for his work ethic and dedication to public service.

The City first hired Johnson in October 1991 as a temporary employee in what was then the Sanitation Department where he worked until December of that year. The City rehired Johnson as a Seasonal Laborer in the Sign & Street Department from April to October 1996 and again as a part-time Seasonal Laborer in the same department from April to June 1997. In September 2002 to January 2003, Johnson again worked as a part-time Seasonal Laborer in the Sign & Street Department.

On April 7, 2003, the City hired Johnson full-time as a Laborer I in the Sign and Street Department. Reclassified in August 2008 to the position of Refuse/Custodial Crew Supervisor in the Street Department, Johnson transferred to his current position as Public Works Technician II in the Street Department when Refuse/Custodial positions were dissolved.

The STARS Service Excellence program recognizes outstanding employees who embody the city’s standards for service excellence and exemplify the city’s core service values. The purpose of the STARS award is to recognize and reward those employees who go beyond their normal job duties in providing outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.

STARS stands for “Succeeding Through Attitudes Reflecting Service Excellence.” STARS are examples of representing the City in a positive light, exhibiting the core values, and creating a better quality of life for citizens. A STARS committee, consisting of City employees, reviews the STARS nominations each month then votes for the nominees.

Congratulations to Ronnie Johnson being named a STAR!
