MFRD reminds residents to dispose of fireworks safely

The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) is reminding residents to celebrate the July 4 holiday safely by using fireworks responsibly and properly disposing of spent fireworks to help prevent fires and injuries.

MFRD's Fire Marshal's Office encourages residents to follow the “Soak & Separate” rule after using fireworks.

“Many fireworks-related fires happen after the celebration is over because spent fireworks are thrown into the trash before they are completely extinguished,” said MFRD Fire Marshal Brian Lowe. “We've responded to fires caused by improperly discarded fireworks. Taking a few extra minutes to cool, soak, and properly dispose of used fireworks can help protect homes, businesses, and lives.”

Residents should follow these simple safety steps:

1. Let fireworks cool – Allow used fireworks to sit undisturbed for at least 15 to 20 minutes after they finish discharging.
2. Never relight duds – If a firework fails to ignite or launch, do not attempt to relight it or look into the tube. Wait at least 20 minutes before approaching it.
3. Soak them completely – Place all spent fireworks and duds in a large bucket of water overnight or for several hours to ensure the inner materials are fully extinguished.
4. Dispose of them safely – Once thoroughly soaked, place the fireworks in a plastic bag before putting them in an outdoor household trash container. Never place fireworks in a trash can inside or attached to a home or garage until they are completely cool and saturated with water.
5. Don't forget sparklers – Sparklers cause many burn injuries each year and can burn at temperatures hot enough to melt glass. Place used sparklers in a bucket of water immediately after use.

“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to the professionals,” Lowe said. “We encourage everyone to attend a permitted public fireworks display whenever possible. If you choose to use consumer fireworks, always follow the law and make safety your top priority.”
