LIVE FIRE – First Due Operations: Are You Prepared?

Robert Moran, Fire Chief, Brewster, MA, FD

8:00am – 5:00pm

Using acquired structures, this multi-station, hands-on live fire training program will place students in a variety of first due task oriented engine and ladder company assignments including fire attack and extinguishment, primary search, forcible entry, ventilation, and laddering. Using NFPA 1403 Live Burn Standards the program will provide attendees the opportunity to enhance their fireground experience and improve their ability to conduct task oriented assignments as a member of a team of first arriving engine and truck companies. The program will start with a short classroom based summary of recent Underwriter Laboratories (UL) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) studies, today’s modern fire environment, and the roles and responsibilities of first due companies after which the students will be rotated through various hands-on evolutions where they will be challenged to conduct appropriate size-ups, develop first arriving strategies, and implement and perform the tactics required to control the fire incident. After each scenario a “backstep” type after action discussion will be held in order to identify concerns or problems recognized by instructors or experienced by the students. The feedback and information gained will then be used by the instructors as a tool to ensure the students are meeting the identified goals and learning objectives of the program.

LIVE FIRE – RIT Under Fire

This program provides firefighters with the skills to effectively operate as a member of a rapid-intervention team (RIT), including firefighter drags and carries, breaching, heavy lifting with hydraulic and pneumatic tools, cutting utilizing a variety of torches, and hands-on, scenario-based, training involving a firefighter mayday. Skills are practiced under Live Fire conditions.

Wednesday, October 18

County/Suburban Fire Tactics

Curt Isakson, Battalion Chief, Escambia County, FL, Fire Rescue

8:00am – 5:00pm

This full day program covers Engine & Truck Tactics necessary at most structural fires. The student will rotate through six tactics stations that last 70 minutes each. Group 1 “Stretching & Flowing” Group 2 “Forcible Entry with real crushing doors that snap like locks. Prop provided. Group 3 “Weapon Selection & Understanding Hose & Nozzles” Group 4 “Search & Removal Techniques” Group 5 “Ladders & RIT” Group 6 “Ventilation & Saws” The class can handle 48 students. That is 8 per group to allow for numerous reps in the 70 minutes. I would drive up from Florida and bring a large portion of the equipment needed. This class can be held in a parking lot/Parking garage if necessary. A drill tower or acquired structure is always great.
