Midstate pastor Jason Scales will share inspirational remarks as keynote speaker for the Feb. 6 Unity Luncheon at Middle Tennessee State University where five recently named “unsung heroes” will also be honored.

Tickets are now on sale for the 29th annual Unity Luncheon, set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Student Union Ballroom, 1768 MTSU Blvd. on campus. Reserved parking for attendees will be available in the parking lots across the street off Blue Raider Drive.

Coordinated through and hosted by the Office of Intercultural and Diversity Affairs, the luncheon recognizes Black Americans in the community — the “unsung heroes” — who have contributed their time and talent for the enrichment and welfare of the entire community and the state of Tennessee.

A native of Shelbyville currently living in Christiana with wife Barbara, a former MTSU administrator, and their son, Isaiah, Scales serves as pastor of Believers Faith Fellowship, with locations in Christiana and Shelbyville. The published author also serves as the college representative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at MTSU as well as being a board member of Renewed Life Ministries and Shelbyville Soup Kitchen.

Before entering full-time ministry, Scales spent a decade in the finance industry. He holds a bachelor’s in psychology and an MBA from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

This year’s honorees and their categories include: Sherica Nelms (Education); Regina Harvey (Community Service); Thaya Morant (Excellence in Sports); Vincent Windrow (Advocate of Civility); and Darryl Chaney (Contribution to Black Arts).

In addition to the guest speaker, the banquet-style event includes live entertainment and an awards presentation. Tickets are available online only through Jan. 31 and will not be available at the door.

Prices are $20 for students and $35 for nonstudents. A table of eight seats is available for $280. For more information, call 615-898-5812. To purchase, visit https://www.mtsu.edu/aahm/unity_luncheon/.

The Unity Luncheon is an MTSU tradition that has been around since 1996 where the institution honors selected community members during the university’s Black History Month celebration. To date, there have been 146 unsung heroes honored.
