MTSU Relay for Life Brings Campus Together to Fight Cancer

Students, faculty, and community members gathered at the campus recreation center for this year’s Relay for Life event, hosted in partnership with the American Cancer Society. This student-led event raises money for cancer research while honoring survivors, caregivers, and those who have lost their lives to the disease.

Relay for Life offers an engaging and meaningful experience, featuring games, food, and activity tables throughout the evening. Participants walk laps around the track while fundraising, with all proceeds supporting the American Cancer Society’s mission.

The event traces its roots back to the 1980s, when physician Gordy Klatt started the first Relay for Life by walking and collecting donations. Today, it has grown into one of the organization’s signature fundraisers, held across the country and on college campuses nationwide.

One of the most powerful moments of the evening is the luminaria ceremony, where decorated bags honoring loved ones are placed around the track and illuminated. The ceremony includes a moment of silence for those lost to cancer, followed by a celebratory walk recognizing survivors.

Beyond fundraising, Relay for Life creates a space for connection, compassion, and community. It brings people together across campus to support one another and raise awareness about the impact of cancer, reminding everyone that no one fights alone.

This event continues to unite the MTSU community in the ongoing fight against cancer.
