Rod Key announces bid for Rutherford County Commission District 19

Local businessman, Rod Key, wants to bring the success he has had in Rutherford County, working to improve the quality of life for his fellow residents, to the Rutherford County Commission.

Today, Key announced he is running in the August 2020 election for the District 19 County Commission seat, which encompasses portions of Smyrna, Murfreesboro, and Rutherford County. The seat was previously held by Steve Ervin, who passed away unexpectedly. Joyce Ealy was appointed by the Rutherford County Commission to serve until the August 2020 election, she is not seeking election.

With his unique military background and education, Rod has distinguished himself as a leader with a passion for helping people discover their potential. Rod served 12 years in the Marine Corps and Reserve, earning the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Serving as Platoon Sergeant in the Gulf War, Rod successfully led his team of Combat Engineers through many enemy obstacles and high-security missions.

Prior to his current role as owner of Key Fitness and UFit Murfreesboro, specializing as a corporate trainer and speaker, Rod created a successful security service business which specialized in physical security, executive protection, security cameras and systems and private investigation. Along with maintaining all company responsibilities, he provided leadership for more than 140 employees.

Rod earned his BS degree in Biology from Middle Tennessee State University and his Masters Degree in Educational Leadership. He spent several years in the public school system as a teacher and coach at Eagleville High School. During his tenure there, he developed two new courses, Criminal justice and Forensic science. Rod also followed a personal passion and started a wrestling program where he was twice named Coach of the Year and led his team to a Regional Championship and a 5th place State Championship within three years.

Recognizing Rod’s value as a strategist and health expert, the mayor of Murfreesboro appointed Rod to serve on his committee as an Ambassador of Wellness to plan and implement a variety of wellness initiatives to improve the lives and health of city residents. Through his passionate leadership and investment in people, Coach Rod continues to have a significant and positive impact on the health and wellness of the community of Murfreesboro.

Key has lived in Murfreesboro for 36 years. He and his wife, Dawn, have two children and attend North Boulevard Church of Christ.

The election will be held on August 6, with early voting from July 14-August 1.
