Sobriety Checkpoint Set in Clifton’s Memory

A sobriety checkpoint will be dedicated to the memory of Clifton Braunwalder, a 13-year-old Boy Scout killed by an impaired driver four years ago.

The fourth annual Clifton Braunwalder Memorial Checkpoint will be from 10 p.m. to midnight, Friday, April 20 on Old Nashville Highway near Rocky Fork Road, said Rutherford County Sheriff’s Cpl. Michael Rodgers.

Clifton, who lived in Lascassas, was changing a flat tire on the family car when killed by the impaired driver April 10, 2014 on Interstate 24 near Sam Ridley Parkway. He played football for St. Rose of Lima Catholic School.

Sheriff’s Major Steve Spence said the memorial checkpoint remembers Clifton’s actions.

“Clifton’s family supports the sheriff’s office on the checkpoint,” Spence said. “They don’t want another family to suffer the loss of a family member.”

A memorial placard on I-24 recognizes Clifton.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies and Smyrna Police will check drivers for sobriety.

Overtime costs of the checkpoint will be paid through a grant by the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office.
