Sue Wood Harris obituary

Sue Wood Harris of Abbeville, AL died on August 23, 2018. She was born on February 4, 1932 in Abbeville, Alabama to Samuel Landrum and Claudia Parker Wood. Sue grew up in Abbeville and lived her entire life there except her four years at Huntingdon College and a few years in Atlanta and Mobile. Sue met her soulmate, Joe Ed Harris, while at Huntingdon College and they were married March 7, 1953. They were married for 65 years: best friends, workmates, supportive parents and fun loving grandparents. Sue was an administrative assistant in Montgomery, Atlanta, Mobile and then for the Superintendent of Education in Henry County before returning to college for a second degree in education. She taught at Headland High School, Abbeville High School and at Abbeville Christian Academy. She taught English, typing and physical education and that love for teaching also spilled over to instructing swimming lessons for 20 years to hundreds of children and adults of Abbeville. She was a lifelong member of Abbeville United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School to the junior high students and also was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a lifetime member of the Matron’s Club where she served as an officer several years. Sue and Joe Ed retired in 2000 and they began traveling more and spending lots of days at Seagrove Beach with children and grandchildren who always called out SUEMAMA the minute they arrived. She always joked she wanted a beach house because she knew grandchildren would come more often and they did. Sue loved cooking and entertaining. Holidays at her home were a feast and enjoyed by many, but her caramel cakes from her secret recipe always brought a smile to all. Sue and Joe were founding members of Abbeville Christian Academy and believed education was a strong foundation for their children and grandchildren. Sue is survived by her sons, Mark Harris (Portia) of Huntsville and Joel Harris (Teresa) of Newville, daughter, Claudia H. Sherer of Murfreesboro, TN. She is also survived by her sister, Ann Wood Hicks, of Birmingham, grandchildren Brian Harris (Gina) of Birmingham, Anna Ashby (Drew) of Atlanta, Joseph Sherer (Lindy) of Nashville, Patrick Sherer (Audrey) of Murfreesboro, Parker Sherer of Nashville, Kaitlin Britton (Ben) of Buford, GA, Lauren Sirkis (Jeff) of Birmingham, Joshua Harris of Newville and great grandchildren Luke and Sam Harris, Jackson, Davis and Sarah Kate Ashby of Atlanta and Emerson and Houston Sherer of Nashville. She was preceded by her husband, Joseph Edward Harris on March 6, 2018.

The celebration of life for Sue will be Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 3 pm at Abbeville United Methodist Church with visitation from 1 to 3 in the church family life center. There will be a family burial at the Abbeville City Cemetery located behind First Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Brian Harris, Joseph Sherer, Patrick Sherer, Parker Sherer, Joshua Harris, Drew Ashby, Jeff Sirkis and Zack Hollingsworth www.woodfinchapel.com
