Tim Swann Retires After 33 Years With Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department

It has been said if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. If that’s true, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department Assistant Chief of Operations Tim Swann has clocked zero hours in his 33-year years of firefighting. Swann’s last day on the job is today, September 29.

“It’s been 33 years and it’s been a good run,” Swann said. “I have genuinely enjoyed my employment and would also like to express my deepest gratitude to my coworkers for always treating me with the greatest respect and helping me to develop my professional.”

The fire service has always been a part of Swann’s life since he was born. His father, Bobby Swann was a firefighter and served as the MFRD Fire Chief for 15 years until he retired in 1988; two years before his son started working for the same department.

Swann was promoted to Assistant Chief of Operations in Aug. 2023, a position he held as an interim role since July 2022.

Swann began his career with MPD in 1990 as a firefighter. He has served as a Driver, Captain, and Battalion Chief. Swann is a member of the Communications Committee for the digital radio and tower infrastructure that the department now uses. He was a member of the Police/Fire training facility Committee that designed the proposed facility on Central Valley Road. He was also the lead grant writer for the 2007 AFG (Assistant to Firefighters) grant where MFRD was awarded $387,000 to purchase new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus for the Engine Companies. Swann is currently a licensed Tennessee State Electrician and was a licensed contractor for eight years.

“Assistant Chief Swann’s dedication and years of service to our community have made a lasting impact, and his presence will be greatly missed,” said MFRD Fire Chief Mark McCluskey. “I wish Tim a fulfilling retirement and continued success in all his future endeavors.”

A retirement ceremony for Swann was held at MFRD Administration building. Swann’s family, friends and fellow colleagues were in attendance.

Swann is a graduate of Riverdale High School. He attended Nashville State Technical College, Chattanooga State, and Vol State.

Swann has been married for 36-years to Suzanne Swann. They have three children, daughter Jessica King, and sons Andy and Chris Swann.

Swann is not leaving the fire service. He has accepted a job with Tennessee State Fire Commission and will begin his new job on Oct. 9.
