United Way Announces a Successful Stop the Summer Slide Book Drive

The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties (UWRCC) announced a successful Stop the Summer Slide book drive presented by Atmos Energy on Tuesday, May 16th, at the Smyrna Event Center.
The Stop the Summer Slide event provides books for children in pre-K-6th grade in our local community and aims to prevent a decline in reading proficiency during the summer, referred to as the “summer slide.” More than 600 new and gently used books were collected, including chapter and dual language books. Books were sorted and packed by 20 volunteers and distributed to the following local agencies: Domestic Violence Center, Murfreesboro City Schools, Read to Succeed, and Rutherford County Boys and Girls Club.
Kendra Reasoner and Kora Vincent with Atmos Energy were among the 20 volunteers who participated in the Sort-a-Thon and shared a statement from Atmos Energy. “At Atmos Energy, we believe in making a difference in the lives of children by providing resources that help kids read at grade level by 3rd grade. We are thrilled to be the presenting sponsor of Stop the Summer Slide and are thankful for our ongoing partnership with United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties.
