Vehicle Theft/Pursuit/Arrest – Searching for Suspect
At approximately 4:20 pm today, Smyrna received a call of a stolen vehicle that had been taken from Valero Market at the corner of Weakley Lane and Sam Ridley Parkway. Inside the stolen vehicle was a small child and the father attempted to stop the vehicle as it was leaving the parking lot onto Weakley Lane. Another motorist at Valero picked up the father and they attempted to catch the stolen vehicle while calling 911.
A Smyrna patrol officer was in the area and began pursuing the stolen vehicle. The pursuit continued down Weakley Lane and onto Couchville Pike. The vehicle crashed behind a home in the 6000 block of Couchville Pike and the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot into the woods behind the home. The patrol officer immediately secured the child (unharmed) and provided a detailed description of the fleeing suspect.
Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office assisted Smyrna Police in searching for the suspect. The suspect crossed through some woods and fields but was apprehended by RCSO deputies in the 5000 block of Henley Road.
The suspect, CORBETT L. NEWMAN (33), is being charged with felony Theft of a Vehicle, Driving on a Revoked License, Evading Arrest, Reckless Endangerment, and other charges that may be pending. Newman may be facing charges from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office as well.
Smyrna Police are looking for a potential accomplice to this theft. Newman exited the driver’s door of a silver, 4 door Acura and entered the stolen truck in the Valero parking lot. A second person was sitting in the passenger seat of the Acura and crossed the console and entered the driver seat after Newman exited the Acura. We believe this person is a white female, petite build, wearing a pink or peach colored shirt and may have blonde or light brown hair. Anyone who may know this person is urged to contact Smyrna Police at 615-459-6644.
This is still an active and on-going investigation and further charges/arrests may be pending. No further information is available at this time.
