Sheriff’s School Resource Officers will ask for donations for 41 Rutherford County Special Olympians competing in the state Special Olympics competition in May.

Special Olympics Coordinator Lou Paschall said the intellectually disabled athletes will compete in track and field, aquatics, bocce, powerlifting and tennis.

“Area 16 for Rutherford County athletes uses the money donated by Toot’s diners to pay for uniforms and assessments fees for our athletes to compete,” Paschall said. “We especially appreciate the support of Toot’s, Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh, and the Schools Resource Officers in raising money to support this event.”

General Manager Spencer Wilson of Toot’s on Broad said the restaurant will offer a Wings & Rings special of 10 chicken wings or chicken fingers and a one-half order of onion rings for $5.99 for the event.

“Here at Toot’s on Broad we love being able to give back to the community that gives so much to us,” Wilson said. “Wings & Rings is a truly special night for us. It’s an event that we look forward to each year.”

“Getting to partner with the Sheriff’s Department and Area 16 Special Olympics is an honor for me and my staff,” Wilson said. “We are looking forward to a great evening full of ‘Good Food and Fun.’”

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh said the School Resource Officers support the Special Olympians.

“Many of our SROs attended the Area 16 Special Olympics track and field meet last Friday for Rutherford County athletes,” Fitzhugh said. “It’s very heart-warming to watch the enthusiasm of our athletes as they compete. The state Special Olympics allows the students to showcase their skills for Tennessee.”

Fitzhugh thanked Toot’s and their customers whose donations allow the Special Olympians to represent Rutherford County in the state games.
