Memorial Boulevard Widening Project Expands Road to Five Lanes

Murfreesboro and Rutherford County could soon move one step closer to a major widening project along Memorial Boulevard.

City officials say they are nearing completion of a final application to TDOT for a proposed project that would widen Memorial Boulevard from Thompson Lane to West Jefferson Pike. The plan calls for expanding the roadway to five lanes along the entire stretch.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $90 million. The City of Murfreesboro has already committed $25 million and is hoping Rutherford County will participate in funding a portion of the project, particularly in the area from near the Walter Hill Bridge to West Jefferson Pike.

Officials say the goal is to get the project placed on TDOT's priority list, which would help secure future state funding.

Even if approved, this would be a long-term project, with construction currently expected around 2033.
