MTSU Horse Therapy Program Helping Veterans Heal Through Connection and Confidence

At Middle Tennessee State University, a unique program is changing lives by helping veterans find healing in an unexpected place, the barn.

The Center for Equine Recovery for Veterans, known as SERVE, partners veterans with MTSU students through a 10-week program focused on growth, confidence, communication, and emotional healing. Through hands-on interaction with horses, participants experience a different approach to therapy that goes beyond traditional methods.

For many veterans, this is their first time working with horses. What starts as uncertainty quickly turns into trust, connection, and a sense of calm. Horses, known for their intuitive nature, help participants better understand and regulate their emotions while building confidence and communication skills.

The program, which began over a decade ago as a graduate research project, has grown into a meaningful community effort that continues to impact lives both inside and outside the barn. It not only supports veterans in their recovery journey but also helps rebuild a sense of community and belonging.

On April 11th, the annual SERVE Showcase will give veterans the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have developed throughout the program. The event also invites the community to see firsthand the powerful impact this program is making.

This is more than a program. It is a path forward, built on progress, purpose, and connection.
