MTSU President Dr. Sidney McPhee Announces Retirement After 25 Years of Leadership
After more than two decades of transformative leadership, Middle Tennessee State University President Dr. Sidney McPhee announces his plans to retire effective December 2026.
In this heartfelt address to the Board of Trustees, Dr. McPhee reflects on his 25-year tenure, highlighting the university’s growth into a nationally recognized institution. During his time as president, MTSU expanded academic programs, achieved R2 research designation, enhanced its campus with over $2 billion in new and renovated facilities, and strengthened its commitment to student success.
Following his announcement, members of the Board of Trustees honor Dr. McPhee’s legacy, recognizing his leadership through major challenges, including budget constraints and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his role in expanding academic offerings, improving graduation rates, and positioning MTSU as a top provider of college graduates in the region.
The university will begin a national search for its next president as it prepares for the next chapter.
