Several MPD employees promoted and two receive awards

Murfreesboro Police Chief Michael Bowen announced the promotion of one sergeant to lieutenant and four officers to sergeant. Two others received awards.

Lt. Nathan Corwin was promoted from sergeant. Corwin joined the department in April 2016 and was promoted to sergeant in the Patrol Division in July 2021. He currently serves as an evening shift commander in the Uniformed Division. His assignments have included Field Training Officer, Directed Patrol and Honor Guard. Corwin is an FBI-LEEDA Trilogy recipient, an Exchange Club of Rutherford County Officer of the Year recipient, and a STARS Award recipient. He is a United States Army Veteran with 23 years of military serves and currently serves as a First Sergeant in the Army Reserve. Corwin earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and is pursuing a master’s in law enforcement, and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego.

Sgt. William Carrion joined the department as a police officer in November 2019. He completed instructor development and serves as a department instructor in case law and traffic stops. Carrion served as a Field Training Officer for three years and was assigned to the Directed Patrol Unit. He previously served in the United States Army Reserve and earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from MTSU.

Sgt. Brianna Dunn joined the department in 2015 as a dispatcher and became a police officer in 2019. Since 2022, she has served on the Homeless Outreach Support Team. Dunn is a Crisis Intervention Team instructor and is a current member of the Crisis Negotiation Team. She was named The Exchange Club of Rutherford County Officer of the Year in 2022. Dunn earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from MTSU in 2014.

Sgt. Ryan Ellis joined the Murfreesboro Police Department as a police officer in May 2019. His assignments have included the Community Oriented Policing Services Unit, Field Force Operations Unit, and Field Training Officer. Ellis completed instructor development training and earned a Bachelor of Science Criminal Justice from Tennessee State University.

Sgt. Robert Oeding began his career with the department as a police officer in 2019. Before his promotion, he served as a Field Training Officer and is a current member of the Special Operations Unit. Oeding has completed multiple specialized training courses including instructor development and less-lethal instructor.

Sgt. Colby Reed joined the department in 2019 as a patrol officer. He served in the Directed Patrol Unit and Honor Guard before being transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division where he served in the Special Investigations Section also serving as a task force agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Reed received the 2023 Exchange Club Officer of the Year award, the 2024 International Narcotics and Interdiction Investigation of the Year award and the 2025 Chief’s Commendation Award. Before joining the department, he served as a patrol deputy and Field Training Officer with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. Reed is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with two deployments to Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Middle Tennessee State University. Chief Bowen also presented two employees with awards.

Officer Trae Smalley received a Chief’s Commendation Award for his work on a long-term narcotics investigation that resulted in the seizure of large quantities of narcotics, weapons and currency and led to multiple arrests. Smalley joined the department in 2017 as a patrol officer. He has served as a Field Training Officer, and as a detective with Criminal Investigations Division Violence Crimes Unit, Narcotics Unit, and Overdose Unit.

Communications Specialist I Jeanne Smith received the Rutherford County 911 District Telecommunicator of the Year Award. Smith joined the department in October 2021 as a CS1 call taker. She is a member of the Peer Support Team and Appreciation Recognition Team.

The department recognized the promotions and awards during a ceremony Friday, May 1, at police headquarters.
