Nine Reasons Not to Leave Rutherford County in October
Every October the same thing happens in Middle Tennessee: the humidity finally breaks, the maples along the Stones River start to turn, and half the county piles into the car to drive somewhere else for a pumpkin. This year, don't. The best of the month is already here, most of it within a few miles of the Square, and a surprising amount of it is free.
Here are our picks, in date order, all inside Rutherford County.
1. Walter Hill Fall Festival — Saturday, Sept. 26
A season-opener with a small-town heart. Heartland Baptist Church, 307 E. Jefferson Pike, fills its grounds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with food trucks, vendors, bounce houses and a silent auction. Organizers are also collecting stuffed animals for Asher's Animals, so bring one along. Event details »
2. Murfreesboro Home Expo — Oct. 2–4
Three days at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum with free admission and a building full of contractors, designers and people with opinions about your kitchen. 3. Martin's Home & Garden Fall Festival — Saturday, Oct. 3
The garden center at 1020 NW Broad Street turns its lot into a festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — local vendors, food trucks, live music, games, and the practical bonus of picking out this year's pumpkins and mums while you're there. It is a celebration of small business as much as the season.
4. Nature Day at Barfield Crescent Park — Saturday, Oct. 10
Free admission, with exhibits and activities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wilderness Station. It is a park-wide open house run by the city's naturalists, with a native plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and food trucks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — and the best parts happen on foot. Our Nature Day guide »
5. STEAM-a-Palooza — Saturday, Oct. 10
From noon to 4 p.m., rain or shine, the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring (502 SE Broad Street) sets up an outdoor festival of booths run by local scientists, engineers and artists — robotics, agriculture, meteorology, physics and more — with live performances and food trucks. 6. Tennessee STEAM Festival at Murfreesboro Airport — Saturday, Oct. 17
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Murfreesboro Municipal Airport lines up aircraft and emergency vehicles for families to climb into: an AH-64E Apache from the 101st Airborne, a Tennessee Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk, a Vanderbilt LifeFlight helicopter, homebuilt experimental planes and MTSU's DA-40 trainer, alongside police and fire vehicles and flight simulators. 7. Cannonsburgh Village After Dark — Oct. 16 and 17
Bring a flashlight. From 6 to 9 p.m. both nights, the pioneer village turns into a flashlight hunt among the log cabins, with fall crafts, games, music, hot drinks and sweet treats. It is $5 a person and free for ages 5 and under, and it is gentle enough for elementary-age kids — this is not a haunted house. 8. a-MAZE-ing Glow Nights at Lucky Ladd Farms — Oct. 23 and 24
After sundown the corn maze at Lucky Ladd Farms, 4306 Rocky Glade Road in Eagleville, lights up with glowing pathways, a dance party, friendly animals and free glow accessories. It is Halloween for kids who want the fun without the fright. Tickets are required.

9. Trick or Treat Around the Historic Square — Friday, Oct. 30
The day before Halloween, starting at 3 p.m., downtown Murfreesboro turns the Public Square into a free trick-or-treat loop. Flat sidewalks, daylight and no dark driveways make it ideal for small children. Arrive early; by late afternoon it is shoulder to shoulder around the courthouse. Event details »
