Downtown Murfreesboro: Where to Eat and Shop Around the Square

Downtown Murfreesboro is built around its 1859 courthouse, and the blocks that ring it are still where the town meets for coffee, a Saturday market and a long dinner. The square is compact, and everything below sits within a few minutes' walk.

Independent shops and long-running local restaurants share the streets with newer arrivals, and the mix changes often. Weekday lunches are busy with people who work downtown, and Saturdays bring out families and market shoppers. Treat this as a starting loop, and leave room to duck into whatever catches your eye.

Joanie's

South side of the square · 13 S. Public Square, Murfreesboro, TN 37130

This locally owned coffee shop and kitchen serves scratch-made food from breakfast through dinner, so French toast at lunchtime is no problem. The space now spills into the storefront next door, with a front room facing the courthouse, a living-room corner with a fireplace and a back room for groups.

Tip: Grab a seat up front to watch the square wake up, or claim the fireplace corner on a cold morning. The full menu runs all day, so breakfast for dinner counts.

Tip: Come early for the best produce and bring a sturdy tote. If you have questions, the market's information tent is on the west side.

Part of a Tennessee restaurant group with locations across the state, Puckett's opened here in 2017 and serves Southern comfort food from breakfast on. The hot chicken has local fans: it was named best hot chicken in the 2025 Rutherford County Main Street Awards. Weekend evenings bring live music.

Tip: Check the music calendar before you go, and arrive early on weekends if you want a table with a view of the stage. Big groups can book private dining.

North Church Street · 116 N. Church St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130

Next door to Puckett's, this cheerful scoop shop serves handcrafted ice cream, pairing classics that stay on the menu with seasonal flavors that come and go, including dairy-free choices. It is the easy answer when someone in your group wants dessert and someone else wants a stroll.

Marina's on the Square

North Maple Street · 125 N. Maple St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130

Serving the square since 1998, Marina's is the dependable Italian spot locals come back to for calzones, traditional pastas and pizza. It is casual and family friendly, the kind of room that hosts birthday dinners and first dates on the same night.

Tip: Weekend evenings get busy, so call ahead to put your name on the wait list before you walk over.

The Alley on Main

West Main Street · 223 W. Main St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130

Just west of the square, this scratch kitchen has been a downtown dinner standby since 2014. Steaks, seafood and pasta are made fresh daily, specials rotate with the seasons, and the full bar leans on bourbon, wine and craft beer.

Tip: Seating is first come, first served, so arrive early on Friday and Saturday nights or settle in at the bar. Celebrating? Ask about the semi-private room, which seats up to 30.

Plan it

Park once and walk: every stop in this guide is within a few blocks of the courthouse. On-street spaces around the square carry time limits, so read the signs.

Saturday mornings in market season are the liveliest time to visit, and Main Street Murfreesboro's calendar fills the rest of the year with summer concerts, restaurant weeks and holiday events. For a night out, pair dinner with a show at the Center for the Arts on West College Street. Shops and kitchens set their own schedules, so check current hours before you go.
